To be mother is one of the priceless emotion which can never be expressed enough. It is an experience of a lifetime. After nurturing the baby for nine months inside womb and going through the painful procedure of Parturition, this beautiful affectionate bond between child and mother is seen and the emotional connect remains forever.

For this procedure of childbirth to take place in a smooth and comfortable manner, mom’s health is one of the important criteria. Prenatal care along with postnatal care are essential and beneficial for mother and child both. Whereas parental care is focussed to prevent any complications before and during pregnancy, postnatal care focusses on maintenance of mother’s health after pregnancy and the care of child to be taken properly.

Each criterion related to health including regular doctor visits, monitoring of foetus in womb, checking vital signs of the pregnant woman or proper nutritional diet; all comes under the prime concerns of prenatal care. Regular doctor visits ensure the proper growth of foetus inside body along with balanced nutritional diet which focusses on preventing all the complications and acts as a reservoir of energy. Inclusion of macronutrients like carbohydrates and proteins are recommended as energy production sources whereas micronutrients like Vitamin- D, iron, calcium, folic acid are advised for reducing abnormalities in child. Hence lots of vegetables and fruits should be consumed with high fibre foods. Water should also be drunk in large quantities along with intake of dairy products. These all complete the essence of a balanced diet.

Advice for mom to be includes –

  • Proper sleepDue to anxiousness and alteration in hormonal levels, sleep is deprived in pregnant ladies. Proper schedules can lead to in between naps and hence timed sleep in night.
  • Proper postures – Proper postures during sleeping and sitting should be taken care of for no discomfort to baby or mother.
  • Exercise – Regular gentle exercises are required to be done for proper relaxation of body.
  • Alcohol should be avoided.
  • Abstain from smoking.
  • Yoga is advised as a good source for meditation with right poses.
  • Avoid consumption of unpasteurised food or non- hygienic substances – infection control leads to safety of child and mother.
  • Less consumption of caffeine is recommended for control of baby’s heart rate as increased levels can lead to miscarriage or preterm birth.
  • Avoid raw foods and seafood rich in mercury levels.
  • Increase the intake of water as much as you can. It will flush out the toxins from your body and ideally you need to consume 8 to 10 glasses of water on a daily basis.

Similarly, postnatal care is also important for both maintaining health of baby and mother. Breastfeeding is one of the procedures where mother has to be energetic and hence diet should be well balanced with proteins, vitamins like Vitamin B12, folate, Vitamin C, and calcium and at regular intervals for energy production. Hygienic food should be consumed with more consumptions of fluids. Proper sanitary precautions with gentle exercise schedules should be followed as advised by doctor.

Along with health of baby, well-being of mother is of utmost importance. Mother is the one who nourishes the baby inside her body and she is the only one who takes care of baby after birth as well.
