Who doesn’t like being fit? Looking good is just the plus side of being healthy and in shape, but there are times when it seems like all your hard work is in vain. No matter how much time you’re spending in the gym, unless you change your habits and opt for a healthier lifestyle, you will never be truly fit. Luckily, you don’t have to give up everything and move to the gym, there are simple everyday habits that make a huge difference in the long run.

Getting a good night’s rest is incredibly important not only for your productivity, but for you overall health as well. When you sleep, your body is recovering from the stress you’ve gone through during the day, allowing you to gather strength and wake up feeling refreshed. Sleep is how your body recovers from pretty much everything: strenuous exercise, stressful day at work, and illness. When you get enough sleep every night, you will be more productive in the office, but you will also be more likely to go through a difficult workout session in the gym and get better results. Try not to work too late and stay up watching movies, because decent sleep is more important than that.

Let’s face it, most our jobs involve us sitting around for more than 90% of time, and as easy as it may seem, sitting can be harmful for your health. In fact, you might be less healthy than an average guy who never works out. If you sit too much, you might be at risk of many conditions, but number one is heart disease, according to Mayo Clinic. The best thing to do is take several short breaks during the day and walk around your office or hallways. You can easily make several hundred steps every couple of hours; it doesn’t take very long but it’s great for you.

We all have cravings, especially when we’re under a lot of stress and we feel like we deserve a treat. Reaching for chips, buttered popcorn, candy bars, and ice-cream may seem like a good idea, but your body won’t appreciate it. Instead, you can try eating healthy treats: fresh fruit dipped in honey or dark chocolate, bananas with peanut butter, cauliflower crust pizza, homemade chips… All these things are easy to make and they are ten times as healthy as store-bought ones.

Sometimes it’s the little things that count most, especially when it comes to daily routines. Next time you drive for work, deliberately park further than you usually would and walk to your office building. Whenever you have a chance, opt for stairs instead for escalator or elevator, and when you take a bus or a subway home, get off a station earlier and walk home. These simple things will do wonder for your overall health as you will stay in shape longer.

Bikes are amazing for several reasons: they are great for exercise, convenient to park, they save you money, and they are environmentally friendly. No wonder so many people choose to ride a bike as a workout, as bike is a great way to burn calories but it’s better for your joints than running. You can start riding a bike every day, and try not to be limited to stationary bike in the gym. You can browse for bicycles and bikes online and check out high quality mountain bikes or even hybrid bikes which is perfect for commuting to and from work. Make it a habit to for a ride alone or with a friend every weekend, pack lunch in your backpacks, and explore the countryside. You will enjoy your time outside, get a chance to work out, and spend some quality time together.

Dropping the sugar

Sugar may be sweet, but it’s not very good to you, especially when you take into account the fact that sugar is everywhere: in every food and drink you can buy. Dropping the sugar from your diet may not be as easy as it sounds, as sugar causes a form of addiction, and you can catch yourself really craving sugar after a few days. Start slowly: take your coffee black, without any cream and sugar, don’t use sweeteners in your tea, and when you need a dessert, choose fresh fruit instead of a candy bar. If you really need to sweeten your food or drinks, get a jar of raw honey and use that instead – it’s sweet, but it’s healthy and good for you.

Of course, none of us is perfect, and we all have our own guilty pleasures, but that doesn’t mean that you should feel bad every time you eat a doughnut or light a cigarette. The key is to find balance and choose to be healthy every day, decisions which will result in you being fit and staying in shape for a long time.
