What is breast pain?

Breast pain, also known as mastalgia, is an extremely common problem and affects over 85% of women at some stage during their lives. Though there has not been a study pointing out that this issue can lead to a cancer yet, it may cause many discomforts that people suffering it always find treatments to get rid of.


What causes breast pain?

Breast pain may be triggered by hormonal fluctuations that are cyclic in nature. Some main factors leading to the change of hormone levels are:

  • Menstruation: you can have it before or after your periods
  • Puberty in both girls and boys
  • Pregnancy, especially in girls who are too young
  • When a female approaches menopause
  • You can also have it while just beginning to breastfeed your child

#1.  Ice pack

One of the easiest methods in this list is using ice pack – a very common thing in every house.

According to MedlinePlus, ice pack is used in case of any injury. It is because ice has the ability to constrict the blood vessels. Ice packs are also useful for alleviating fibrocystic breasts.

How to apply:

  • Take a few ice cubes in a towel
  • Press over the affected breast for about 15 minutes
  • Repeat this several times per day to see the better result.

Note: Remember not to apply ice directly on your breasts.

#2. Self-massage

Massaging the breasts can obviously help to lessen the breast pain. This will improve blood circulation and the drainage in the lymph ducts. Good blood circulation will help maintain the healthiness of breast tissues and avoid pain for breasts.

How to apply:

  • When bathing, take some soap and apply on your breasts, gently massage from around the nipple upto as far as the armpits. Note: Do not apply soap onto nipples in case you are breastfeeding.
  • Alternatively, mix a few drops of camphor oil with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and massage your affected breasts few times a day.
  • Repeat these until there are positive changes.

#3. Vitamin E

Some researchers has shown that a diet rich in Vitamin E is essential to alleviate the pain in breasts. Vitamin E helps you control the changes of hormone levels, thus avoid breast tenderness.

How to apply:

  • It is well known that a daily supplement of 200 to 400 IUs of Vitamin E is beneficial for your condition
  • Great source of Vitamin E from: vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables, fruit juices
  • You can also use the oil of this vitamin to massage your breasts gently several times per day.

#4. Apple cider vinegar

For long, apple cider vinegar has served as a reliable remedy in the natural health community and some skin treatments, such as skin tags. In treating breast pain, this vinegar acts as a supporter in detoxifying toxins in your body and controlling hormone levels. Therefore, your tenderness of breast can be eliminated efficiently.

How to apply:

  • Add 1-2 teaspoons of unfiltered raw vinegar into some warm water
  • Drop some honey in this compound and stir it well
  • Consume twice per day.


#5. Evening primrose Oil

#7. Fennel

The last remedy suggested is fennel. This useful seed helps alleviate tenderness and pain of breasts due to the richness of phytonutrients and volatile oils in its content. Moreover, fennel can restore the balance of female hormones and help your avoid water retention.

How to apply:

  • Prepare 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds
  • Add it to a cup of hot water
  • Steep for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Strain and drink this 2 or 3 times per day (you can also add honey to this fennel tea to get more flavor)
